Issue 13/08 - 18.12.2008 ISSN 1613-7337

Dear Sir or Madam,

Very few markets are registering the high level of growth seen in the solar energy market. And the financial crisis will not change this. This was the conclusion reached at the “9th Solarpraxis Forum” in Berlin. Solar cell production costs will, however, have to be reduced further to ensure this. Laser technology is a key factor in achieving this goal. It automates processes on many levels of the value creation chain in exactly the same way as image processing does (for this, read our interview with Dr. Holst at PCO). The next generation of silicon cells will have a very high laser involvement in its production.

Lasers in photovoltaic production will also be one of the main topics at LASER World of PHOTONICS 2009, so please be sure to visit us from 15 to 18 June 2009 in Munich.

Yours,

Claudia Sixl
Exhibition Director LASER World of PHOTONICS

Save energy with LED street lights and reduce light smog
With the AuLED Street Light, in cooperation with the research institute, HarzOptics, Autev AG plans to bring a cost-effective, energy-saving and environmentally-friendly LED street light to the market this year.
Solar industry continues to forecast growth – despite the financial crisis
At the 9th Solarpraxis Forum in Berlin, solar industry experts discussed the development of the German photovoltaic market. Their conclusion? The financial crisis will not have any significant effects on the local industry. There are other factors, however, such as EEG-Novelle (German renewable energy law), for example, which may give cause for less positive prognoses, for the large-scale power plant market at least.
First rapid prototyping system for 3D nanostructuring
With the highly innovative Laser-Direct-Write process for 3D nanostructuring from the dynamic new company, Nanoscribe GmbH, almost any kind of three-dimensional structure can be produced from various photo-sensitive materials. The optics company, Carl Zeiss AG based in Oberkochen in Germany made a very positive move in acquiring just under 40 percent in the Nanoscribe start-up. Nanoscribe is based in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Lasers for macro processing
Transport and energy are growth industries. Joining technologies that allow large, thick-walled components to be processed with short production times are required for developing wind power plants, pipelines and secure transport containers. The combination of laser and electric arc into a common welding process offers financial benefits. The development of superlative lasers in the multi-kilowatt range will enable the future use of hybrid laser-electric arc processes with big metal plate thicknesses.

"The Photon Force is with us" – Harnessing Light to Drive Nanomachines
Science fiction writers have long envisioned sailing a spacecraft by the optical force of the sun’s light. But, the forces of sunlight are too weak to fill even the oversized sails that have been tried. Now a team has shown that the force of light indeed can be harnessed to drive machines – when the process is scaled to nano-proportions.

A sub-femtosecond stop watch for ‘Photon Finish’ races
Using a system that can compare the travel times of two photons with sub-femtosecond precision, scientists have found a remarkably large difference in the time it takes photons to pass through nearly identical stacks of materials with different arrangements of refractive layers.

Coherent's Verdi exhibited in the German Museum in Munich
The Deutsche Museum in Munich exhibits a frequency comb, in which the Verdi from Coherent, a frequency-doubled diode-pumped solid-state laser, was integrated. Prof. Theodor W. Haensch used the Verdi as pump laser in his breadboard construction for the development of a frequency comb. In recognition for his work the Nobel Prize was awarded to Professor Haensch in 2005.

Pulsed fibre laser markers for use in the electronics, automotive and automotive supplier industries
The compact design and smallest marking head on the market combined with tried-and-tested flexible software and hardware platforms makes integration into end customer lines and OEM equipment extremely simple.

Five innovations that will change our lives in the next five years
Unveiled, the third annual "IBM Next Five in Five" is a list of innovations that have the potential to change the way people work, live and play over the next five years:
Europe is turning into a Continent of Content-Craving 'Connect-aholics'
Across Europe, we are transforming into a continent of content-craving ‘connect-aholics’, according to the findings of the AMD European Connectivity Study of over 5,000 online respondents. Sponsored by AMD, in conjunction with independent research company, YouGov, 77% of respondents said they could not live without daily access to the internet.

Internet Marketing Myth – People who don't buy from you just want something for nothing
Here is another internet marketing myth that has got to be one of the top ten dumbest internet marketing myths that is spreading like wildfire across cyberspace. The term "Freebie Seeker" is one of those phrases that I really hate seeing.

Internet braces for Intelligent Phase Marketing
Intelligent Phase Marketing intends to give its users a distinct advantage over all other online income opportunities by offering multiple opportunities from a single location.

New businesses can reduce risk with web-based accounting systems
Workers who are considering setting up their own businesses during the economic downturn will benefit from new business tools like online accounting software.

Great ideas and tips for stock market beginners
Best suggation for investor that they should be able to understand basic accountancy principles, an annual report and stock market history. You probably do not need to become an accountant, but being able to understand the scoring system of the game can only help.

Magazine inspires hope during an economic downturn
Americans are starting to squeeze the penny more than ever. Large retail stores are shutting down. Layoffs are happening all around us. The fear of scarcity is taking hold of everyone around. Yet, a new magazine called Self Improvement, challenges the scarcity mindset and suggests instead that abundance and wealth are available to us all.
